Hidalgo Griffin, sat on a rocky ledge, his legs dangling over a cliff. Water from a medium sized stream cascaded over the cliff and tumbled into a pool some two hundred feet below. Having camped here for three days, it was time to go. Preparing to raise onto the shelf, he heard a loud noise and was forced off the cliff when a hard blow hit the right side of his head. Slamming into something hard at the bottom of the cliff, pain shot through his leg and side. He made one feeble attempt to raise himself and then passed out.
Thus begins one of many adventures experienced by this young man on the American frontier.

I, Hidalgo Griffin, called Hi for short and known by the Spanish speaking men and women as El Bravio, sat on a rocky ledge, my legs dangling over a cliff. Water from a medium sized stream cascaded over the cliff and tumbled into a pool some two hundred feet below. I was looking into the branches of a tree that was at least three hundred feet tall. We had been camped here for three days and it was time to go. I put my left hand on the rock and leaned to the left, preparing to raise my legs onto the shelf. A loud noise, sounding like a close thunder clap, sounded from behind me and at the same time a hard blow hit the right side of my head. The blow forced me over the cliff edge and I was free falling toward the bottom. I don’t know how far I fell before slamming into something hard. Pain shot trough my left leg and side. I felt myself spinning in air only to land with a mighty jolt lying face down on a hard surface. I made one feeble attempt to raise myself and then passed out.
Hidalgo Griffin, who is half Mexican and Half Anglo, is a young man raised on the American Frontier. He is skilled in all the tasks needed by young men growing up on a ranch. His skills surpassed the needed skills of the day. He became an excellent bow shot, an extraordinary knife fighter, a tracker, and an uncanny ability to blend in with the forest until he was almost invisible.
For six years he wanders the western United States with a companion who started out as a trainee and ended up as a friend and equal. His adventures are many and varied where he picks up new skills and has a chance to use his abilities. His own two feet are his preferred way to travel and horses his first love. With his extraordinary skills and a good education, furnished by home schooling, he even travels to Alaska.

I REALLY enjoyed this book! It's written in the first person so it's almost like reading the diary of a young man on the western frontier. He is intelligent, courageous and trained to be a survivor. He has a wide variety of skills and, luckily, friends.The characters are well developed and the descriptions of the land and events are very vivid. I truly felt like I was immersed in a different time.
The concept of killing an animal for food and immediately preparing the hide and making new moccasins shows a level of competency that we no longer have.
The respect for the land, the animals and fellow humans was incredible. The total contempt for evil-doers was also pretty intense, since those were hastily dispatched.
